The Indian Society of Sleep Research (ISSR), supports the initiative of Sleepwell in advocating the importance of sleep for health and well-being through their various initiatives.

Sleep Matters

Although we all sleep 1/3rd of our life, the importance of sleep in health and diseases was recognized in late 80s.  A large body of knowledge has accumulated over the past 35 years documenting the adverse consequences of short-term, total, or partial sleep deprivation on human learning, mood, behaviour, performance, and organ-system function. Deviations in sleep duration from the normal (insufficient or excessive) may adversely affect human longevity.

Sleep loss results in daytime sleepiness, impaired cognitive performance, reduced attention/vigilance resulting in accidents and major disasters, altered mood/emotional disturbance, diminished memory processing, decreased immunity, and fatigue.

Benefits of a Good Night Sleep

A good night's sleep restores our energy level, sharpens our concentration, helps in better decision making, better memory, better stress management, improves physical health and boosts immune system.

Sleep is the biggest physiological gift of nature for relaxation, rest, and recovery. Based on various studies and data available, ISSR recommends 7-8 hours of sleep every night to Indian adults. Sleep duration and quality are affected by age, psychological and physiological conditions, as well as cultural, societal, and environmental factors.. Sleep curtailment and disturbances are common in modern society. A meta-analysis by Caggiari et al. (2021) on sleep quality showed that 15-30% of adults report sleep disorders, such as late sleep onset, insufficient duration of sleep and frequently waking up at night.

Mattress matters

A good night's sleep is vital for improving sleep quality, overall health, and well-being.Yet, many people underestimate the significant role that a quality mattress plays in achieving good sleep. relationship between sleep and mattresses is inseparable and has a long history. We have been using bed and mattresses for thousands of years for comfort during sleep and good quality sleep.

The importance of a good mattress extends beyond mere comfort—it's a critical factor in sleep quality, efficiency, and our daily functioning. In this article, we will delve into how investing in the right mattress can lead to better sleep health. Mattresses play a pivotal role in achieving high-quality sleep, however there is a scarcity of research in India, in investigating the influence of mattresses on sleep quality, pain, and mood in nonclinical poor sleepers.

In a systematic review by Caggiari et al 2021 regarding type of mattress for back pain states that a mattress that is subjectively identified as a medium-firm mattress and is custom inflated (self-adjusted) is optimal for promoting sleep comfort, quality, and spinal alignment. The best mattress was the mattress in which the spinal curvature in lying position was most similar to that in standing. To ensure efficient sleep quality, a mattress must guarantee the best support for the spine, maintain constant body temperature and reduce body movements during sleep.

The Role of a Good Sleeping Surface

A good mattress provides crucial support and comfort, keeps the spine aligned, minimizes pressure points, and reduces movement disruptions. This translates to high-quality sleep.

A mattress, as a sleep platform, its types and physical properties, has an important effect on sleep quality and rest efficiency. An optimum combination of bedding materials, the structure of the mattress, and its core could improve the overall comfort of mattress, thereby improving the depth of sleep and sleep quality.

The Indian Society of Sleep Research states that a good sleeping surface is important for quality sleep. It provides your body support and comfort for uninterrupted sleep. Discomfort, frequent waking, leading to sleep disruption cycles can become the norm without it.
